Baseball is a game where everything can change with one swing of the bat. Unfortunately, the Meridian Community College Eagles found out Sunday just how true that statement can be. The Eagles fell to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College 10-8 to end their season.
The Eagles got off to a quick start Sunday scoring two runs in the first to take a 2-0 lead. The Eagles continued to cruise behind the pitching of David Dunn and took a 5-0 lead heading into the sixth inning. A seeing-eye single, followed by a bunt single and a walk loaded the bases for the Bulldogs. One swing of the bat later and the Eagles lead was trimmed to 5-4. The Eagles would respond in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run homer from Tyler Lantz to get the Eagles lead back to 7-4.
The Bulldogs battled back with six runs in the seventh, with the big shot coming in the form of a grand slam, to take a 10-7 lead. The Eagles would load the bases in the bottom of the ninth and brought a run across but were unable to get anymore.
With the loss, the Eagles conclude the 2019 season with a 29-15 record. The Eagles finished the season with an 18-10 MACJC record. The Eagles will head into the 2020 season with a strong returning nucleus and will add a promising group of freshmen into the mix.
