The Meridian Community College Eagles went on the road Thursday night to take on division foe Southwest Mississippi Community College. It was a tight game throughout with the Eagles trailing by two heading into halftime. The Eagles kept it close in the second half but fell by the final score of 78-67.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick lead early in the game. The Eagles came out quickly and held a 13-11 lead halfway through the first half. The Eagles continued to hold the lead throughout most of the first half and were able to build that lead to as much as 6 points, but SMCC went on a scoring run to take the lead late in the first half. The Eagles headed into the half trailing 35-33.
The Eagles fought hard throughout the second half but were unable to ever build a big lead. The Bears stretched their lead to double digits, but the Eagles made a run late in the contest. A three pointer from Kylan Hamilton cut the deficit to 6 with 50 seconds left, but the Eagles could not pull any closer.
Alex Oguinn was the Eagles leading scorer on the night with 13 points. Alvarez Powell added 12 points.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 5-5 on the season. They will return to the court Monday, January 14 against Hinds Community College. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Graham Gymnasium.
