The Meridian Community College tennis teams started their season off on a winning note Friday afternoon. The men and women both picked up wins over Itawamaba Community College. The men won 7-2 overall, while the women won 6-3 overall.
The Eagles, playing without number 1 Marco Puric, had a strong start to the 2019 season. The men won 2 out of 3 doubles events and 5 out of 6 singles events. Chase Rigdon and Michael Phillips teamed up to win their doubles match 8-2 and were also victorious in their singles matches. Guillermo Martin-Tunon and Jacob Wiggins also were victorious in their doubles match and got wins in their singles matches, as well. Max Mauney also pulled out the win in his singles match.
On the women’s side, the Lady Eagles won 5 out of 6 singles matches. Kennedy Rodriguez, Elisiva Latu, Zoe Freke, Rachel VanHorn, and Amber Wascomb were all victorious in singles action. Rodriguez and VanHorn also got the win in their doubles contest.
The Eagles improve to 1-0 on the season and will be back in action later this week. The women will return to action Wednesday, February 6 against Central Alabama Community College. Both men and women will be back on the court Friday, February 8 against Southwest Mississippi Community College
