The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles and Eagles Soccer teams opened the 2019 season with a pair of exhibition contests against Hinds Community College Friday night. The Lady Eagles picked up a thrilling comeback 3-2 win, while the Eagles dropped the men’s game 5-2.
The Lady Eagles got off to a quick start led by Sophie Roberts. Roberts scored the game’s first goal in the fifth minute of action. The visiting Lady Eagles of Hinds would score two goals to take a 2-1 lead into the half.
Roberts helped lead the Lady Eagles to the comeback win by tying it up at two-all at the seventy-five-minute mark. The Lady Eagles would take the lead for good in the eighty-sixth minute when Mia Mugford put it past the goalkeeper to give the Eagles the 3-2 lead. The Lady Eagles would hold the visitors scoreless over the last few minutes to pick up the victory.
The Eagle men jumped out to an early lead as well when Kevin Madrid opened things up with a goal to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. After Hinds tied it at one-all the Eagles would retake the lead after a beautiful goal from Cameron McKee. The Eagles would hold the 2-1 lead heading into the half.
The visiting Eagles tied the score at 2-2 in the sixty-second minute. The visitors would retake the lead 3-2 a minute later. They would add two more goals before the game ended to bring the final score to 5-2.
The Eagles will be back in action Friday, August 16 at East Central Community College for another pair of exhibition games. The Eagles will then begin preparation for the regular season.
