Lady Eagles come up short in overtime of Region 23 semifinals
CLINTON - The Lady Eagles battled to the end but came up short against the PRCC Lady Wildcats in the NJCAA Region 23 Women's Basketball Tournament.
With 8.6 seconds and holding onto a 49-48 point lead, the Lady Eagles could taste a semifinal victory, but PRCC would use all 8.6 seconds to pull out a miracle win. Callie Cowan missed her mark on the inbounds pass, turning possession over to the Lady Wildcats, and with .4 seconds on the clock, Ja'Mani Ingram for PRCC found herself at the free-throw line. She made the first and sent the game to overtime, tied at 49. The Lady Wildcats scored the only points of the extra period winning the game 55-49.
The Lady Eagles and Lady Wildcats exchanged the lead in the first quarter and would be tied at 15 after the first ten minutes.
Both teams went cold to start the 2nd quarter, only scoring 2 points a piece in the first 5:15. The Lady Wildcats hit back-to-backs 3's to take a 23-17 lead. Amberly Brown made back-to-back layups to pull within 1 before PRCC took a 26-21 lead into the locker room.
The Lady Eagles open the 3rd quarter on a 10-1 run to make it 21-17 with 6:00 min left. PRCC got a pair of layups to tie the game at 31 with 4:40 left. Amberly Brown made a layup and got fouled. She hit the free throw with 3:32 to make it 36-31.
PRCC closed out the third quarter on an 11-3 run to take a 42-39 lead into the fourth.
Both teams went scoreless for the first 1:55 of the fourth before trading baskets. A Lady Wildcat three-pointer and 2 Lady Eagle free throws put the score at 47-43 with 4:36 left to play. Callie Cowan sank 2 more free throws, then tied the game at 47 on a layup. Arriana Durrell scored her only 2 points and gave the Lady Eagles the lead with 2:25 to play. The Lady Wildcats made 1 free throw with 8.6 seconds to play to cut it to 1, 49-48.
The Lady Eagles never re-grouped and fell short in overtime.
The Lady Eagles finished the season 24-4 and their first trip to the NJCAA Region 23 semifinals since 2014.
