Meridian Community College Women's Tennis Team Achieves Top Ten Finish at NJCAA Division I Tournament
TYLER,TX- This week marked a significant achievement for the Meridian Community College (MCC) women's tennis team, as they clinched a top-ten finish at the NJCAA Division I Tournament for the first time in 11 years. The tournament, hosted by Tyler Junior College at the Joann Medlock Murphy Tennis Center, saw the Lady Eagles finishing in tenth place with 17 points.
The team kicked off the tournament with a stellar performance on day one, dominating the courts by winning seven of eight matches, which positioned them in second place with 14 points. Standout victories included Isabella Quintero's crushing win over Mikaela Correa 6-1, 6-0, and Randy Rakotoarilala's decisive defeat of Maeva Chambon 6-0, 6-1. Other significant wins came from Amelia Anding, Cali Grace Davis, and Lilly Hollingsworth, who all secured points in their respective singles matches.
Despite a strong start, the subsequent days of the tournament proved challenging for the Lady Eagles. Day two saw mixed results, with Randy Rakotoarilala continuing her winning streak and #1 singles. At the same time, Isabella Quintero and other players faced defeats in their matches against tough competitors. The doubles teams also struggled, facing setbacks that contributed to MCC's slide in the rankings.
There were bright spots in the consolation rounds, particularly from Cheludo Monnayoo, who posted a resounding 8-0 victory against Diana Kalajdzic and the team of Cayden Alexander and Lilly Hollingsworth, who defeated their opponents 8-1. The tournament ended for MCC when Randy Rakotoarilala fell in the quarterfinals of the #1 singles to Yerkezhan Arystanbekova with a score of 6-0, 6-0.
Head Coach TJ Carter expressed pride in his team's performance, saying, "Reaching the top ten is a testament to our players' hard work and dedication. This is our best finish since 2013, and it sets a solid foundation to build on for next season."
