Eagles Fall Short to Wallace–Selma in Home Battle
MERIDIAN, Miss. – The Meridian Community College men's basketball team dropped a tough home contest Wednesday night, falling 58–50 to Wallace Community College–Selma inside Graham Gymnasium. The loss moves the Eagles to 1–1 on the young season.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, trading baskets early with little separation. The score was tied at 20 late in the first half before the Eagles began to find their rhythm. Meridian knocked down five three-pointers in the opening half and took a 30–26 lead into the locker room.
The second half began much like the first, as the Patriots opened on a 10–0 run to seize momentum. The Eagles clawed back and briefly regained the lead at 45–44 with under eight minutes to play, but a cold stretch from the field in the closing minutes allowed Wallace–Selma to pull away for the 58–50 victory.
Freshman Fred Motley once again led the Eagles in scoring, finishing with 17 points, while freshman KJ Barnes added 11, including three first-half three-pointers. Motley now has 36 points through two games, leading the team in scoring in both contests to open the season.
Head Coach Clarence Weatherspoon expressed disappointment in the outcome but remained encouraged by the play of his young roster.
"We've got a lot to work on, but I like what I'm seeing from our freshmen," Weatherspoon said. "They're competing hard and learning quickly. We'll use this as a chance to get better."
The Eagles will look to bounce back Friday night when they host SEMO Prep at 7:30 p.m. in Graham Gymnasium. Fans can also enjoy a special halftime performance from the MCC Dance Team.
