MERIDIAN, Miss. – The Meridian Community College men's soccer team secured its first conference victory of the season Wednesday night at C.D. Smith Field, shutting out Northwest Mississippi Community College 3-0.
The Eagles entered the contest 4-3-2 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play, while the Rangers came in at 3-4-2 and 1-2 in league action. Both sides traded early possessions before MCC broke through in the 25th minute. Freshman Moses Bernard, of Speyside, Tobago (Trinidad), found the back of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Meridian extended its advantage early in the second half when freshman Cindey Garcia of Canton, scored to make it 2-0. In the 62nd minute, Bernard struck again, tallying his second goal of the night to seal the win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Iain Cumbest of Pascagoula, recorded the clean sheet in net for the Eagles. Sophomore Jason Guerrero contributed two assists, while freshman Matthew Todd added one.
Head Coach Diego Figueroa was pleased with the performance and the breakthrough win.
"This was an important step for our team," Figueroa said. "Getting our first conference win gives us momentum, and I'm proud of the way the guys executed on both ends of the field."
With the victory, MCC improves to 5-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play. The Eagles will look to build on the momentum Friday, Oct. 3, when they travel to Wesson to face Copiah-Lincoln in another conference matchup.
