Eagles Capture Six Event Wins at Millsaps Meet
JACKSON, Miss. – The Meridian Community College men's and women's swimming & diving teams opened the spring portion of the season with an impressive performance Saturday, competing in an exhibition meet at Millsaps College.
The Eagles made a strong return to competition following the Christmas break, taking first place in six events and scoring well across the board in the head-to-head exhibition.
Sophomore Sydney Cooper led the way on the men's side, capturing victories in both the 50-yard freestyle (23.50) and the 50-yard butterfly (28.26). Freshman Matthew Kirkland added two wins of his own, taking first in the 100-yard freestyle (57.12) and the 50-yard breaststroke (31.76).
On the women's side, freshman Hallie McDonald continued her strong freshman campaign, winning the 50-yard backstroke (37.18) and the 50-yard freestyle (29.86) to round out the Eagles' six event victories.
The meet served as an opportunity for Meridian to get back into racing form after the holiday break while setting the tone for the remainder of the season with several top finishes.
Head Coach Wade Heggie praised his team's effort and representation.
"I'm proud of how our swimmers competed and carried themselves," Heggie said. "They represent Meridian Community College and the state of Mississippi extremely well every time they step on the deck."
The Eagles will next host a series of intrasquad meets on campus in February, with Heggie excited to showcase his program using the MCC campus pool.
