MERIDIAN, Miss. – The Meridian Community College Eagles delivered a dominant showing at Tommy McDonald Field on Tuesday, sweeping Marion Military Institute in a doubleheader with an 11-0 five-inning run-rule victory in game one followed by an 8-4 win in game two.
With the sweep, Meridian improves to 7-4 on the young season.
Game One: Eagles Explode Early in 11-0 Run-Rule Win
Meridian wasted no time taking control of the opener.
After starting pitcher Willa Simmons worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first inning without allowing a run, the Eagles capitalized in the bottom half. Charlee Smith drove in two runs to help Meridian jump out to a 3-0 lead.
The second inning proved to be the difference-maker. Raegan King sparked the offense with a solo home run to lead off the frame, and the Eagles continued to pour it on. Meridian batted around in the inning, with Allie Loftin driving in two runs while a host of Eagles collected RBI's to push the lead to 10-0.
King added another solo home run in the fourth inning to extend the advantage to 11-0, and the Eagles secured the run-rule victory in the fifth.
Simmons earned the win in the circle, striking out three and setting the tone early with her escape from the first-inning threat.
Game Two: Balanced Offense Secures 8-4 Win
The nightcap proved to be more competitive, but Meridian once again controlled the key moments.
Aubree Jones got the start in the circle and recorded three strikeouts in the contest. Offensively, the Eagles struck early when Montgomery Boleware cleared the bases with a three-run double in the first inning to give Meridian the early advantage.
After Marion Military trimmed the deficit to one run, the Eagles answered in the third. Smith drove in Isabella White, and Loftin delivered a two-run double to extend the lead to 6-2.
Meridian added insurance in the sixth inning as Presley Black and White each drove in runs to push the score to 8-4. The Eagles closed the door from there to complete the sweep.
Head Coach Brad Grinstead was pleased with his team's performance in front of the home crowd.
"It was a great showing at Tommy McDonald Field," Grinstead said. "We competed well in the circle and put together quality at-bats throughout the day. I'm proud of the effort and the way we responded when we were challenged."
The Lady Eagles will remain at home Friday to host Lurleen B. Wallace in a doubleheader, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
