MERIDIAN, Miss. — Friday evening at Tommy McDonald Field was about more than softball. It was about legacy, leadership, and a class that helped usher in a new era for the Meridian Community College program.
Following a doubleheader against Bossier Parish, the Eagles honored nine sophomore players and two sophomore managers in front of family, friends, and the home crowd during Sophomore Day festivities.
Recognized on the field were players Presley Black, Mary Coumbe, Camry Johnson, Mollie Mitchell, Allie Loftin, Raegan King, Charlee Smith, Hannah Buckley, and Hannah Capello. Managers Alexis Cowart and Jaymee Carruth were also celebrated for their contributions to the program.
Head coach Brad Grinstead reflected on the significance of this group, noting that they will forever hold a special place in program history.
"This class means a lot to our program," Grinstead said. "They'll always be remembered as the first team to break in the brand new Tommy McDonald Field at the Citizens National Bank Sports Complex. They've helped set the standard here and have represented MCC the right way."
The sophomore class has played a key role in building the culture of the program both on and off the field, helping establish the foundation for continued success at the new facility.
With the celebration complete, the Eagles now shift their focus to the start of conference play. Meridian will travel to Booneville on Saturday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Northeast.
