Lady Eagles Win Three Straight, Defeat Bears to Capture First Conference Win
SUMMIT, Miss. – The Meridian Community College women's volleyball team earned a hard-fought road victory Monday night, defeating Southwest Mississippi 3-2 to secure their first conference win of the season.
The Lady Eagles entered the matchup 9-19 overall and 0-12 in MACCC play, while the Bears came in 5-17 and 2-9 in conference. After dropping their previous meeting in straight sets earlier this season, Meridian turned the tables and battled their way to a five-set win.
Meridian carried plenty of momentum into the contest after a successful weekend on the road in Evergreen, Ala., where they swept both matches of a doubleheader against Reid State Technical College in straight sets. The back-to-back wins gave the Lady Eagles confidence heading into Monday's conference showdown.
The opening two sets followed a familiar pattern, with both teams trading points early before the Lady Eagles pulled ahead late to win each frame 25-19 and take a 2-0 match lead.
Southwest responded in the third, jumping out to a 10-4 advantage before Meridian closed the gap to one at 12-11. The set featured several ties down the stretch at 12, 17, and 21, but Southwest held on for a 25-23 win. The Bears carried that momentum into the fourth, with another tight contest that saw ties at 12, 15, and 20 before Southwest edged out a 25-22 victory to even the match.
The decisive fifth set belonged to Meridian. Tied at 4 early, the Lady Eagles surged ahead 8-4 at the side change and maintained control the rest of the way, finishing off the match 15-10 to earn the conference win.
Head Coach Alex Schimelpfening was thrilled with his team's performance.
"Our team showed a lot of determination and composure tonight," Schimelpfening said. "We've been working hard to put everything together, and to see it pay off in a conference win feels great."
With the victory, the Lady Eagles have now won three straight matches and will look to carry that momentum home as they host Northwest Mississippi on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Graham Gymnasium.
