Stephens Sparks Lady Eagles in Dominant Win Over East Central
MERIDIAN, Miss. – The Meridian Community College women's basketball team continued its dominant start to the 2025–26 season Monday night, defeating East Central Community College 68–46 inside Graham Gymnasium to improve to 8–1 overall and remain unbeaten at home.
The game opened with a slow start for the Lady Eagles as East Central, led by former MCC assistant coach Tia Pringle, came out aggressive and confident. Meridian trailed 19–12 at the end of the first quarter and needed a spark — and they found it in freshman guard Ashlynn Stephens.
Stephens ignited the gym in the second quarter, scoring 11 points in the period alone after a five-point opening frame. Her offensive burst fueled an 8–0 run to start the quarter as Meridian outscored the Lady Warriors 25–9 to take a 37–28 halftime lead.
From there, the Lady Eagles never looked back. Meridian added 19 more points in the third quarter to stretch its advantage to 56–42 and closed the game with steady defensive pressure and efficient scoring to secure the 68–46 victory.
Stephens finished with a game-high 24 points, including four three-pointers, in her breakout performance. Sophomore Terica Smith added 19 points, while sophomore Nataysia Willis chipped in 11.
Head Coach Jocelyn McGilberry praised her freshman guard's response after a sluggish team start.
"Ashlynn came in and completely changed the pace of the game," McGilberry said. "She gave us energy, confidence, and shot the ball extremely well. Starting 8–1, protecting home court — these are things we can build on as we head into a tough weekend."
The Lady Eagles now turn their attention to the Chipola Classic in Marianna, Fla., where they will take on No. 2 Chipola College on Friday and Bishop State on Saturday. Meridian previously defeated Bishop State 63–59 at the Pensacola Classic before Thanksgiving break.
