Lady Eagles Honor Seven Sophomores on Special Night in the Graham
MERIDIAN, Miss. — Thursday night inside the Graham Gymnasium was about more than wins and losses. It was about legacy.
Meridian Community College celebrated Sophomore Night as both the men's and women's basketball teams honored their sophomore student-athletes before taking on Southwest in front of a sold-out crowd.
Lady Eagles Celebrate Seven Sophomores
Prior to the women's game, seven Lady Eagles were recognized at center court for their impact on the program: Braylen Tingle, Akeelah Cain, Awa Diouf, Mia Washington, Lauren Madison, Nataysia Willis, and Terica Smith.
This group has helped guide Meridian to an impressive 22-5 overall record and 10-3 mark in MACCC play, positioning the Lady Eagles in fourth place in the conference standings with postseason play around the corner.
Following the ceremony, Meridian delivered a strong performance on the floor, defeating Southwest 65-45.
At halftime, Willis and Smith were further honored for reaching the prestigious 500-point milestone in their MCC careers, joining the program's 500 Club.
Head Coach Jocelyn McGilberry reflected on the importance of the evening and the impact of her sophomore class.
"This group has been a force all season," McGilberry said. "They've led with heart, toughness, and consistency. I'm so proud of what they've accomplished and what they've meant to this program."
Meridian will close out the regular season at Hinds before returning home to host a playoff game next week.
Men's Team Honors Nine Sophomores
Before the men's contest, nine Eagles were recognized for their dedication to the program: Derek Byrd Jr., Ademola Oladipo, DJ Johnson, Ju'Juan Ray, Kameron Wilkes, Kelton Jones, Ben Cole IV, Issace Grady, and Tramon Bell.
Despite battling through a challenging season, the Eagles competed hard in front of the home crowd but fell to Southwest 81-64.
Head Coach Clarence Weatherspoon spoke highly of his sophomore class.
"I've enjoyed every minute coaching this group," Weatherspoon said. "They've represented this program the right way, and I wish them nothing but success in whatever comes next."
The Eagles will conclude their season Monday at Hinds.
The night's celebration was further energized by performances from the MCC Dance Team during both halftimes, bringing the crowd to its feet and adding to the electric atmosphere inside the Graham.
